A Ned rig combines a compact soft plastic with a small jighead. Its value is the simple presentation: you can swim it, let it fall or work it near bottom without adding a complicated rig.
Match the head and plastic
Choose a small jighead designed for the bait’s diameter and a hook length that leaves the rear of the plastic free to move. Thread the bait straight. A crooked body can spin or track sideways, making it difficult to tell whether the retrieve is working as intended.
Use the lightest head you can manage in the depth and wind you face. That is a control decision, not a rule that the smallest available weight always catches more fish. Check the combined head-and-plastic weight against the rod’s lure range.
Try three different retrieves
Swim and pause: retrieve slowly, pause briefly and let the bait settle. Lift and glide: raise the rod gently, then follow the line as the bait falls. Short bottom movements: move it a small distance, pause and repeat where the bottom allows.
Choose one retrieve for a short pass along a feature. Change only after you can explain what is happening. Repeatedly changing cadence, colour and location at the same time makes a useful comparison difficult.
Avoid dragging into every crack
An exposed hook and light head can catch between rocks or in wood. If the rig repeatedly wedges, try a higher swimming path, a shorter cast or a different angle. More weight may make the same snag worse. A weedless head changes the hook arrangement, but still needs a compatible plastic and enough hook clearance.
If cover consistently defeats this approach, change presentations. The Texas rig protects the hook point more effectively in some vegetation and wood.
Keep the small details consistent
Inspect the hook point and the working section of line after a snag. Replace a torn bait when it no longer sits straight. Some specialised plastics have storage restrictions, so keep them in their original packaging unless the manufacturer says they can be mixed.
Finish the session with one note about control: which head let you follow the fall without constantly hanging up? That is a useful starting point for the next trip, even if you did not catch a bass.
